Canmore - Profile

Industrialism, for which the Bow Valley would become noted for, had already begun when the Canadian Pacific Railway arrived. The growth of Calgary spawned a large demand for lumber, and in 1883, the Eau Claire Lumber Company obtained timber rights and a mill was operated near Canmore until 1886. Lime quarries were developed in the area as early as 1888. In 1908, the CPR developed a cement plant near Exshaw. Through the years the coal mining industry was the mainstay of Canmore's economy. In 1979 the last load of coal was shipped from Canmore.

A new era began. Canmore's new opportunity to develop as a tourist destination and service centre of Kananaskis Country and Banff National Park commenced in one of North America's most spectacular areas, the magnificent Canadian Rockies.

Canmore was selected as the site of the Calgary 1988 Olympic Games cross country, nordic and biathlon events.

Resources in the area include: sand/gravel, cement, limestone, tourism, and recreation.
