High River - Profile

Population: 7,000 plus

High River is located 45 km. (28 miles) south of Calgary, and 183 km. (81 miles) north of Lethbridge. Its location has helped establish it as a service centre for the surrounding, rich farming and ranching land.

Formal settlement of the area began in the 1870's. High River originally was the crossing place on the Highwood River for travellers on the way to Fort MacLeod from Calgary. A stopping place was set up by Buck Smith. The growth in the area was steady and when the railroad track was built through the townsite in 1893, further development ensued.

High River became a town in 1906, and has become an administrative base for the area, as well. It is a community where the residents take an active role in the many athletic, cultural, educational, and social functions supported by the town.

Each Victoria Day weekend (in late May), the Little Britches Rodeo is held in High River. It hosts children as rodeo entrants and also features a parade. Later, in June, the North American Chuckwagon Championships are held at the rodeo grounds.

On the July long weekend, the Big Rocky Mountain Jamboree is held, followed by the Old Time Country Fair, in late August.

While in High River, you might chance to visit the Museum of the Highwood which is located in the old train station. It features a historic train display, and other displays relating to local history. Confirm hours of operation and entrance fees. Also featured in High River are the outdoor wall murals. Definitely a place to plan on visiting.
