Pembina Forks Campground is located on the Big Horn Highway #40, 55 km. south of Robb, Alberta, on the banks of the Pembina River.

Features:

• 10 secluded auto-access sites,
• 10 over-flow and group sites,

• Day-use shelter with wood stove,
• extended fishing season,

Adjacent to Jasper National Park's east boundary, the Alberta Coal Branch is situated in the east slopes of the Rocky Mountains. The area has a long and colourful history that now offers a diverse range of recreational opportunities.

Rail was the only access to the area that once supported a population of thousands. Although the coal and forest industries that brought them here are still very active on "The Branch", a population of only a few hundred remain south of the major centres of Hinton and Edson.

The Alberta Coal Branch Club organises The Coal Branch Reunions, (the next scheduled reunion is to be held August 1, in the year 2000) and draws thousands back to the area once again.

Get off the beaten paths and while visiting the area consider:

• Fishing: the headwaters of the Pembina, Brazeau, Macleod and Embarrass Rivers as well as the Fairfax, Mary Gregg, Fickle and Muskiki Lakes are all nearby. Trout well over 2 lb. have been caught from some of Alberta's newest lakes: Lovett and Silkstone.
  
  
• Boating: from the still waters of local lakes, to the glacier fed canyon of the Brazeau River, recreational opportunities exist for the novice to seasoned enthusiast.
  
  
• Hiking: Fiddle and Rocky passes and the South Boundary Trail provide "Backdoor" access to Jasper National Park. Observe alpine wildflowers or find berries and mushrooms in season. Birds and other wildlife abound.
  
  
• Exploring: from the hoodoos of Wild Sculpture Trail to the depths of Cadomin Caves, undeveloped local attractions are found throughout the area. The hamlets of Robb and Cadomin and numerous ghost towns provide insight into the area's frontier past. Amuse the historian, archaeologist, palaeontologist, or geologist in you.
  
  
• Touring: by foot, bicycle, horse or bus, tours are offered locally on native, historical, industrial, and ecological themes.
  
  
• Winter: down-hill and cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing and ice-fishing are all available within an hour's drive. Silver Summit and Marmot Basin are the down-hill facilities serving the area. From back-country trails to Hinton's world-class Athabasca Lookout Nordic Centre, cross-country skiing venues are numerous and varied. North of Edson; south to the Pembina River has become a snowmobile playground. Several staging facilities have been developed.
  
  
• Your Hosts: John Whitehead and Kathy McWhirter are committed to service and stewardship for their customers, facilities and surrounding lands and resources. With backgrounds in forestry and mining, they have been active in the area since 1982. Their diverse experience and local recreational contacts are offered to all their guests; just ask.

Known also as AFFTA, this network embraces in excess of twenty operators offering a wide range of interpretive and adventure tours, as well as essential services.

Accommodation options range from: country, mountain, and adventure lodges, bed and breakfast to campgrounds. Interpretive tours are offered on foot, bicycle, boat or bus with many interesting themes and locations.

Adventure tours range from canoe to river boat, caving and rock-climbing to horseback riding and snowmobiling. Members feed, fuel, equip and accommodate visitors, while providing custom-tailored outdoor recreation that will make your vacation exciting, satisfying and affordable.
