It is customary for the French colonists to sell the children of their female slave.
The practice might, and did, mean that a father sold his own child.
The King of France prohibited this practice.

A woman who abandons her baby, the penalty is death.
Unmarried, pregnant women faced public persecution and, therefore, go to great lengths to hide illegitimate births, often avoiding baptizing them to avoid detection.  They also continued to ship the babies out of the colony to live with poor widows or Natives.

It is customary for the French colonists to sell the children of their female slave.  The practice might, and did, mean that a father sold his own child. Notice of the matter having been called to the attention of the French King, an attempt was made to prevent the practice by inserting in the instructions sent to the colony in 1721-1722, a provision forbidding the sale of either a female Negro or Indian slave or her child, if a free colonist were the father of such a child. The same instructions further declared it in harmony with religion and the welfare of the colony that at the end of a certain period of time both mother and child should be given their liberty, and so be made free inhabitants of the colony.  Such a kindly attitude on the part of the home government met with but little response in the colonies.

In Quebec, for a woman who abandons her baby, the penalty is death.  Unmarried, pregnant women faced public persecution and, therefore, go to great lengths to hide illegitimate births, often avoiding baptizing them to avoid detection.  They also continued to ship the babies out of the colony to live with poor widows or Natives.  Midwives who assisted seldom break confidence, and the women thus escaped detection.   Seigniorial geography of New France becomes the parish boundaries in most cases.

The English are encroaching on Maine, and kidnapped Anselm St. Castin, a Abenakis Metis and carried him to Boston.  They confined him for five months.  They also attempted to capture Father (I)-Sebastien Rale (1657-1724) but failed.  The English also put a price on on the Fathers head and sent a 200 man army to capture him, but also failed.
