This section lists all known Garneau's in New France and Quebec
In France and early New France the Garneau name was Garnaud and
at times in France Garnault.
The name Garnaud and Garnault is Germanic in origin meaning Warenwald
Waren = Protection + Wald = Government that controls.
The name Warinwald is used in Vienna and Charente regions of France.
The name spelling Garneau first appeared in New France about 1700,
this name spelling does not appear in France.
My Garneau ancestors moved west of Lake Superior before 1790
so my interest in recording names in Quebec after this date decreased.
