A quest for the Western Canadian Garneau roots must consider the possibility that the ancestral name may not be Garneau.

Gournon alias Gornow and Gourneau alias Gorneau is the early 1800's spelling used at La Pointe, Wisconsin.  This basic deviation may represent two different clans or families.

Gurnoe alias Gaunaux is the accepted traditional spelling for the Lake Superior clan dating to the mid 1800's.

Gurno and Gurneau are the accepted current spellings for the Red Lake area dating to the 1870's.

Garneau and Gourneau are the surviving spellings in the North West.

Grignon is an early Fort Michilimackinac family name dating before 1738 and is a possible derivation to Gournon, Geurnou, Geurnoe

The Lake Superior, Red Lake and Western Gurnoe, Gourneau clans are related having a common origin in the mid to late 1700's.

Family tradition suggests the family originated near Quebec City in the district of Montmagny.  Some contend his arrival to new France was in 1632 (1659).  According to family tradition the first mixed blood of the North West is the result of marriage to a captured Dakota Sioux being ransomed from the Ojibwa.  It is assumed this story applies to Louis's father.  The family claims she was sent to Montreal for an education then married by Garneau.  This Montreal story likely applies to apply to Archange Cadotte who married Louis Gurnoe about 1824.  The Garneau clan appears to have been closely associated with the Cadotte clan movements in the 1700's and early 1800's.

This quest must also consider some other likely possibilities of origin such as Gareau, Gornou, Grenon, Geroux, etc.

The Gournon spelling appears to have originated in 1835 with Father Frederic Baraga at St Joseph Mission, La Pointe, Wisconsin.  Gornow spelling is used in the 1836 Treaty.

There is a high possibility that two different Garneau families existed at or West of Lapointe in the late 1700's, namely the Gournon or Gornow family and the Gorneau or Gourneau family.
