My Garneau ancestors arrived New France under the names Garnaud.

Garnaud aka Garnault is a Germanic name from Warenwald (Waren=protection + wald=Government that controls), the name appears in the Departments of Vienna (Poitiers & (Haute-Limoges) and Charente (Angouleme), France.  The spelling of the name Garneau was first used about 1700 in New France.  It is highly unlikely you will find a Garneau in Europe before 1700.

I am not going to the Saintogne, the area around the town of Saintes, said to be the real Garnaud origin, this year, not to the Poitou, France.

My genealogical work has been confined to Burgundy and "our " Village of Dracy-les-Couches.

There is no known ( at this time) connection between Dracy  in the East and Poitiers etc. in the Loire valley except that Dracy is East of Mayenne on the Loire, well ABOVE Orleans, Garnaud- Hugenots came to England <1700, but though the records are there, I am a working man and have not had the time to look at the Hugenot Society of Great Britain

Records In modern France there are >400 Garnaud, the list is from the French Tel Directory by computer extraction.

Of Marie Mazouer ( Mazout means tar and I suspect they were originally Caulkers i.e. people who applied Bitumen to seal the spaces between the planks of the boats in La Rochelle harbour/shipyards) before her Dad and Granddad
became Hoteliers. By the time of her Granddad about 1608-42 years, .i.e.. 1566, French Birth Marriage Death (BMD)  Certificates had only just started, so one might not get back much further.

For the Parents of Pierre Garnaud and Jeanne Barault one would need to find which is the Dept. of La Grimaudiere and then in which Principal town is the ARCHIVE.

In Burgundy Dept 71 ( Saone et Loire) it is Macon !  I have looked up La Grimaudiere in the Michelin guide: as it is in Vienne and Poitiers is in the Dept,. of Vienne and is the MAIN city of the Dept. 86, I reckon the Archive we need is there. i.e. in Poitiers.

I think it amazing that you can go back 13 or 14 generations to LG of the 1663 wedding , but I can go back to 1600 in Dracy-les-Couches, the French were 200 years ahead of the English on BMD Certificates.

Louis Garnaud !!? Birth date?

If aged 26 on the day of his 1660 Confirmation, he was born in 1636, why then do so many people say 1641 ? Also if he left La Rochelle in 1656 and was born in 1641 he would have been only 15! at the time, whereas  a birth in 1636 makes him 20. What do you think about this.

I know some Garneau, descended from LG, in Florida these days, who, like me, would like to clear up this birthday please? !
