GENEALOGY OF GARNEAU in NON Quebec 1815 - 1815

My quest for the father of Louis Garneau (1790-1863) is complicated as much of the information is based on the Mixed Blood Treaty of 1854 and it was racked with fraud as many script applicants entered two or more names and this was not resolved until the 1870's.  On the positive side Joseph D Garneau aka Gurnoe (1812-1910) was extensively involved, as an identifying witness, as to script applicants, giving the family records more credibility.  It would appear that the Gurnoe (Garneau) clan might have originated at Lac Flambeau, Minnesota.  The Lac Du Flambeau band originated in Wisconsin near the source of the Flambeau and Chippewa Rivers where a small Metis settlement was also located and then they migrated north west into Minnesota.   The Ojibwa were located at Boise Forte (Nett Lake), Fond Du Lac, Grand Portage, Leech Lake, Mille Lacs, White Earth and Red Lake.  When the term 'Lac Flambeau, Minnesota' is used I don't know what location is being referred to but I suspect it refers to the band members being in Minnesota..

John Garneau who died before 1791 (must be 1891?) married Marie Lapointe born between 1740-1760, source Rootsweb ID1333883  (location is unknown but with a name of La Pointe it is safe to assume she is likely from La Pointe or Lake Superior).

(5)-Monsieur Garneau of Montmagny, the stray born before 1769 possibly La Pointe, Chagouamigon Bay, Lake Superior; its more likely he is out of Quebec.  Its also possible he is not a Garneau and may have another name that sounds similar.  Its possible Monsieur Garneau had two or more wives at the same time, one in La Pointe, one Red Lake and one Red River?  If this is true he would be in the region 1789 to 1817.

    In 1775 Baptiste Colin born 1775 North West see 1750 a possible Garneau alias, census 1831 Red River, North West.

    In 1775 a Francois Giroux is recorded on the Saskatchewan River with a Michel Cadot.

    In 1794 a Gareau is recorded on the Red and Assiniboine Rivers.

    In 1795 a Gareau is recorded on the Assiniboine River attempting to buy an Indian wife, daughter of Foutreau.

    In 1795 Joseph Geroux of Mackinac is working out of La Pointe, Wisconsin.

    In 1811-1813 Louis Garneau, blacksmith living Montreal H1758

Married (A) about 1789, likely La Pointe, Madeleine Island Lake Superior (Wisconsin) to a Dakota Sioux who is the mother of (6)-Louis Gurnoe born 1789-1790 died 1863.  Mother Sioux (Se Gaunaux So-Way-Guay) is still receiving Indian allotment Sault Ste Marie 1846 listed as the Mother of (6)-Louis Gurnoe (1790-1863).  It is noteworthy she used the name Se Gaunaux.  Family tradition suggests she was a Dakota Sioux captured by the Ojibwa and sold to Garneau.  There is a high possibility he had another country wife at Red Lake, Minnesota and another on the Red River of the North.  The other possibility to consider is that he is a second generation in the West although the Mixed Blood treaty of 1854 suggests he is 1/2 Ojibwa not 3/4 Ojibwa.  The Land patents for Isabella County dated May 27, 1871 reads NENW section 1 T15N R4W acres 40.71, NE Yaw So Way Guay.  It is noteworthy that the females of the Potawatomi Band use the words Way & Guay in their naming convention but at the Lapointe band some men use this same naming convention.

Married (B) about 1789 likely Red Lake to a Ojibwa who is the mother of Joseph Grenon Gurneau aka Little Thunder born 1790 Pembina or La Pointe, Wisconsin.  Mother Ikwezensiwin Ojibwa.  First married unknown but first child Joseph Gernon Gurneau, b-1825 Pembina; 2nd married Angelic (Gernon), one child Ann Gernon, b-1841 La Point, Wisconsin, 3rd marriage unknown about 1853, 4th marriage Marguritte Ungott (Gernon) 

French permits 1681 to 1752 the only other Oliver listed is Oliver Lafleur de Lavaltrie to Post Kamanisigoka.  Oliver some times used the name Garneau or similar.

1739 May 8 permit Garaheau dit Coline from De Carillon to Poste de Temiscaminge (Ontario).

1747 July 9 permit Olive Garneau from Tous du Bout de L'Lle to Poste de La Pointe de Chagouamigon (Lake Superior, Wisconsin).

1748 June 16 permit Oliver Ganahau from Tous de Sainte Anne to Poste La Pointe Chagouamigon (Lake Superior, Wisconsin).

1749 May 26 permit Oliver Gaspe (?) from Du Sault au Recollet to Poste de Chagouamigon (Lake Superior, Wisconsin).

1751 June 1, permit Oliver Garahan (?) from De Sainte Anne to Poste de la Baie des Paunts (Green Bay, Wisconsin).

        FIVE CHILDREN ARE POSSIBLE ?

(6)-Louis Gournon, Gornow and Gurnoe is born 1790 Wisconsin died October 21, 1863 Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, son of Gaunaux and Se Gaunaux So Way Guay (Quay); married about 1815 La Pointe, Wisconsin a Se-Ranze Say-Shaw-Ne-Nie born 1800 Canada daughter Se Ranze.  A second marriage about 1828 Sault Ste Marie, Michigan a (V)-Archange Cadotte.

Michael Keplin suggests the parents of Louis are Louis Gourneau and Striped Earth Woman based on the BIA and/or Joseph Grenon and Nowananikkwee based on Assumption Church records.  

(6)-Joseph Garneau Sr. also Gournon is born about 1795 Red Lake, Minnesota,  married about 1811 Red Lake, Minnesota to a Delondie of the Red Lake Band.  Joseph D Gurnoe (1812-1910) testified he was related to Louis Gurnoe (1790-1863).   Most likely same Joseph Gournon listed as living before 1801 in Ontario (MB7-4).  Name evolved to Gourneau at Turtle Mountain.

(6)-Margaret Gounon also Gournon (Grenon) born 1800-1801 # (1803) Ontario died June 23, 1871 St. Boniface daughter Joseph Gounon and # Nowananikkwee;  married about 1830 Alexis Bonami Lesperance (L'Esperance alias Magnon) born 1797 Quebec son Pierre Lesperance (L'Esperance alias Magnon) and Marguerite Aucoin, living about 1833 to 1870 St. Boniface, Red River. (MB-7-4).  # Possible sister of Joseph Gourneau b-about 1790, source Gail/Morin/Michael K. Keplin.

Lareau and Elmer Courteau.  Louis Godreau born 1816 Red River Land with wife and no children listed 1835 census Red River.

(6)-Louis Goudreau born 1816 Native Lands (Red River Region) married probably to a Parenteau as living 1835 census Red River, North West with the Parenteau family.

Father not noted but most likely Joseph Gourneau or Gernon, source St Ann's Centennial, Turtle Mountain, North Dakota.

Joseph Kaishpa Gourneau alias (Joseph Gernon age 60 in 1850 Pembina census) therefore born 1790.  Kaishpa means (the elevated one).

Joseph Sooza Gourneau (1817-1912) married about 1846 Judith Delorme.  This could be Joseph (Kahasigiwit?) Gourneau born November 1822 son Joseph Grenon Jr. b-1790 and Angelique Folle-Avoine.

Ten to thirteen years between kids is highly unlikely.  Either more kids are associated with this family or these people are part of another family or it represents a second marriage?  If birth first child 1795 then second child more plausible.

Louis Gurnoe (Gournon, Gornow and Gurnoe) is born 1790, Wisconsin died October 21, 1863 Sault Ste Marie, Michigan, son of Gaunaux and Se Gaunaux So Way Guay (Quay); Isabelle Cota in 1890 claims death 1865.

Married country style about 1809, likely La Pointe, Wisconsin,  Angelique Defoe, 2nd marriage 1820 Archange Cadotte, according to Isabelle Cota in 1890.   John Gurnoe, son Louis and representative of Louis Gurnoe by Archange Cadotte claims his branch of the family is the only legitimate children.  The Gurnoe family was represented by E.S.B. Sutton, C.C. Yerkes and M.J. Doyle and the Cotal branch by J.W. McMahon, in Circuit court, July 5, 1890; Decision reserved.  (see 1815)  My research strongly suggests their was two marriages for Louis Gurnoe, the who, where and when maybe in question but not the fact he was twice married.  Louis was censured by the Ojibwa in 1836 likely for abandoning his first wife and family.

Married about 1811 Red Lake, Minnesota a Delondie.  They are of the clan from Red Lake Area that eventually move to Pembina then on to Turtle Mountain, North Dakota.  The name changed at Turtle Mountain to Gourneau.
 
This clan is related to the Lake Superior clan based on testimony of Joseph D. Gurnoe (1812-1910) during 1854 treaty.  Source is census, July 29, 1871, Pembina and, October 1, 1892, Turtle Mountain, North Dakota. (MB7-4)  Two Joseph Gurnoe's are listed in 1839, age 43 and 23 in the list of Mixed blood Chippewa of Lake Superior, claimant for payment according to the Treaty of 1837.
