VARAIBILITY CRITERIA

 20% have benign MS with no permanent disability

 30% have intermittent symptoms with long periods of stability

 40% have a slowly progressive form of the illness

 10-20% have steady progression from onset

 30% of those diagnosed with chronic progressive MS stabilize after two years

 75% diagnosed with MS never need a wheelchair  and 25% diagnosed with MS end up requiring the use of a wheelchair

30% of those diagnosed with chronic progressive MS stabilize after two years

40% diagnosed experience no disruptions of their normal activities

 2/3 of patients remain functional after 20 years of being diagnosed

Most are diagnosed between the ages of 30 to 50

Average lifespan of the MS patient is 75% of normal

In  Scotland & Wales life expectancy has increased (1963-1992) by 9 years while non MS by only 5 years.

Life span is not significantly affected by MS except Acute MS.

2/3 of MS patients remain functional after 20 years of being diagnosed

Siblings of people who develop MS at Age 20 or younger are almost 5 times more likely to develop MS than siblings of those who develop MS over age 40.  The life risk is still small at 5%

Sisters are 2.5 times more likely to get the disease than brothers.

The sex of the parents does not appear to impact the siblings getting the disease.
