I just want to congratulate you on your very informative site. I have been trying to research
Metis ancestors for a friend of mine and found your site. I have a very great interest in Canadian and USA history. I have Quaker ancestors as well as French Canadians. Your comments on racism and its founders in our country was informative as well. My husband and I have been targets of White Supremist in B.C. and Alberta, because of our surname of Kisch. My friend that I am doing
Metis research for has also been a target of the W S, so we know what prejudice is all about.
Thank you again for your site and sharing it with others.
Sandra Kisch - 01-2004
I was delighted to discover your site & some of my ancestors listed in
it.
Thanks so much for your response.

I was glad to run across your web site.
I am a rabid genealogist.
My ancestors are Hawaiians and Metis.
I will save this site and peruse it latter when I have time to absorb.
Any way, aloha from Hawaii!

My name is Jeffrey Turcotte, a Metis, who's family is from Fishing Lake, Alberta
(Flamond and McLean stock).
I spent about two years living in St. Paul with my grandmother as well as
spending many of my childhood summer vacations in Fishing Lake.
I have recently found myself interested in my family genealogy and along with my
wife will be looking deeply into this.
Your website brought some hope to someone who until recently (not) the most
proud of his heritage.
Your website helped me to push away that regrettable thinking, Thanks to you!

First I must thank you for your site.
At first, I visited your site for the Garneaux connections I have in my SD
family
that are part of my Rosebud Reservation past;
then for my MS connections, that are part of my daily life.
I thank you for giving me some information and insight into what they are going
through.

RD, thanks for your website.
I am an amateur historian having collected many hundreds of books.
I commend you for your research and for providing us (me) with a source
reference.
I also thank you for the quote "History is a collection of conflicting
views of any event".
Studying history is a challenge that is created by these conflicting views.

Upon researching Egyptian kings/pharaohs, I came upon your site.
Thanks for all of your work !
Your documentation of history is succinct and enjoyable
(definitely a 'bookmark' for many future hours of reading).
Also, on your homepage,...I appreciated your comments about "birth, women/children, environment.
I look forward to seeing Canada, and certainly plan to move 'north'.
Currently, I am a rancher in southern New Mexico.
The land is spacious, but the gov't has ruined everything.
"All to Say"...a quick, well guarded visit...at the most.

I would like to comment on the information provided in your website
because it is really innacurate regarding the relationship and history of
the French and natives in North America.
First you generalize, you falsely state innacurate information, and
may I ask were are the Acadians of maritimes??
They were also French, but I can't seem to find them,
you seem to include all the French of the early 17th century in New
France.
I think that you should go read more books on Canadian colonial history.
If you would like a reading list, I am sure I could get one for you

Tansi ! I am wondering if you know when and where the first Canadian Indian Reserve was?
I used your search engine (which I really like) but didn't find this time what I was looking for.
I will continue to say " your site is worth a million"!
May you be well and have enough~

I am taking a course in Quebec history this semester, and
I am using your website as one of the references.
I'm bad with navigation, and may have missed it on your page,
but what motivated you to create this webpage?
Who is your intended audience?
Was there a certain view or opinion about Canadian history that you wanted reflected through your work?
Any answers, or even a short and sweet bio of yourself would be greatly appreciated.

Fantastic website you have.
Good evening and what an incredible website you have.
I want to remark how fantastic it is.
It's been more than two hours that I've spent on your page alone, just reading
and reading.
Your website has enlightened me very much and I plan to return and read more.
It is truly fascinating, including the Metis section.
I've learned a lot more than I had expected, thanks to your background in this
area.
You deserve an award for your "site".
Please do continue with the European History page.

How are you doing-your health was tipsy the last time I visited-pray you are in better health,

Thank you so much. I kinda fell into this site while looking for info on petroglyphs, mi'kmaq which I love.
My grandmother taught me the medicine way as well as the wisdom at a time when it was not nice to be native. I am so glad that I chose to walk this pathway. It gave me the pride and strength in who I am.
Again I say wellalin, thank you. I will return to this site often and will pass it on to others.

Your Site Is Great
I had to comment on your site.
I have lived in my present home and area for nearly 50 years and
I have seen and remember many things.
It is the best, reading that I have read in some time.
I find that the information is easy to digest and it has answered many
questions
about Alberta and Edmonton which have been playing on my mind too.
Its a wonderful, an informative collection of events that you have created
here
and I just had to say Thank you for sharing.

Your history time-line is amazing for anyone doing Canadian genealogy

I just want to thank you for allowing the public to view your sections titled "European History"
and for allowing individuals to copy it.
I have been doing the genealogy of my families and thought it would be very good to have a reference like an historic timeline as an aid.
I found your site through Google, doing a search for "European History" as I knew Italy had not been born as a republic until 1860.
Linda - 07-2004
I am grateful to Mr. Garneau for kindly sharing his research, without which, I may not have been able to realize my French-Canadian ancestry. For me, it was a revelation that my maternal line is Metis French-HoChunk/Winnebago-Menominee (Descaris-Hopoekaw). When family members were asked about an Indian bloodline their answer was, "Not!"
Mr. Garneau's work has also helped me to begin to understand how politics played on the Metis Culture and how politics shaped the loss of the Metis Culture in the U.S.
Connie Lea Fredericks State - 07-2004
Thank you again! I shared some of your site info and links with a new
friend of mine and they called this morning to tell me how excited they were
to see some info on their "Vandalle" family.
As I said before, it is certainly an inspiration!
*Hugs* for all your hard work!
Lori-Anne Malone - 07-2004
50 years is a long, long time but I'm ecstatic that you have remained true to the cause and more importantly, you have kept your site free to the public. Thank you, your work is deeply appreciated.
Jackie Trotchie -08-2004
Thanks you for your lovely work (oh, the thousands of hours!)
in creating the Indian History pages.
I stumbled across them today, while looking for
material on Ojibwa healing ritual, and I was delghted.
Almost 40 years ago, I was given an "American
History" course to teach in a college in California,
and I took the term seriously -- but found almost no
information gathered (except a fine old book on 1st
peoples by a woman named Ruth...).
Anyway, I struggled over the next few years to pull
together some of the materials you have so
beautifully synthesized -- and with such a strong
understanding of "history" as storytelling.
I'm so glad to see the work leaping forward in my
lifetime.

I consider myself as an aspiring Metis Historian who has seen your site
recently.
I have looked at your Metis Section of your site; and I find it interesting.
Del Majorie 10-2004
It is odd to "talk" to a Mr. Garneau who doesn't speak French.
But that comes with Canadian history, I guess.
Your site holds a fantastic wealth of information, but unfortunately is not
user-friendly. I wish I could use this valuable information, but reading
full-screen endless lines of historical data mixed with Metis resentment is
too much. If your goal is to defend the Metis, fine, set up such a site; if
it's to give historical data, do that. But don't mix the two. History never
gains from after-the-fact interpretation.
Please see this as a friendly, constructive comment, since I greatly admire
what you have gathered and that my interest is precisely trying to tie
Quebec families with Western (and Western starts with the Ottawa River!)
Metis families. (If, on my part, I can supply information about the
St-Lawrence Valley families, I'll gladly do so.)
I ended up on your site trying to find Detroit's Ste-Anne records. It seems
that you' have used them, but since there is no reference, one can just guess.
I hope you didn't find my approach too direct.
Denise Latremouille 11-2004
Many thanks for this valuable piece of information.
We have had many different ideas put forward, and
even the Meti Hertage Centre in Winnipeg knew nothing of it.
(The number in question comes from
