I thoroughly enjoyed your website.
It has lots of pithy little details listed about the story of Canada and the rest of America.
I learned a lot that I hadn't discovered before,
and was pleased to read some things I thought were totally obscure,
such as the story of the English men who were marooned in Florida
and chose to walk along the Eastern Seaboard to the fishing grounds
at the mouth of the St. John's River (between New Brunswick and today's Maine).
Enjoyed it, Thanks.

 Chris Green -01-2005

The research you have done is wonderful
and the way you have put it together according to year makes the history easy to follow.

 Camille -1-2005

I just wanted to say how pleased I am to read your historical accounts.
Every now and again, I come back and read bits and pieces...
Truly amazing what you have accomplished!
Thank you for putting this information together.
You should be very proud.

 Denise DeForge -1-2005

Hello, I was wondering if I could buy a copy of your
Metis Nation Of The North West a complete history of the Canadian Metis culture.
I love reading it on line but I would prefer to have my own copy. Thank you.

Tracy Turk -01-2005

I'm writing to say how much I appreciate your web site.
I'm a Metis writer living in Toronto.
I really got inspired by poring over your site;
it is incredibly comprehensive and engaging in a way that academia could never achieve
with all of its million dollar budgets and PhDs.
Anyway, I would really like to just offer my thanks.
I will include your site as one of the first links we mention in the book.
(hopefully Indian Affairs will keep it in)
Keep up the good work, and Chi Meegwetch.
In my book you beat Pierre Berton and Margaret Atwood hands down for "Greatest Canadian"
(What a concept.  I suspect we Canadians keep trying to boost our self-esteem in these silly ways precisely because we have sanitized and "hallmark carded" our history and don't recognize the true richness of our roots).

Doug Anderson - 01-2005

I just stumbled onto your web site.
It really is remarkable!
I am a descendant of Louis de LaRonde, but
didn't know as much about him in my previous 53 years as I found out in 2 hours on your web site.

Just thought I'd thank you,

Larry Steed - 01-2005

Wow - I just happened upon your website and
I wanted to drop a quick line to say "well done!"
I just wanted to commend you on all your hard work -
obviously many hours have gone into this site.  Congratulations.

E-mail #1 - verbatim

"Thank you for collecting and displaying this wealth of information. I read it with reservation however because I realize that people tend to project their world view upon history. May I suggests that you maintain objectivity and in doing so to avoid making person interpretations on historical events. That way your site, which aught to be focused on historical fact, will not take on the face of personal propaganda. Its hard to do when you feel so passionately about certain moral issues, and there is a place to express those emotions. I do not believe that place to be on a web site dedicated to " history" instead of " philosophy"."

E-mail #2 - verbatim

"I find all of what you write re. "Metis history" interesting. I respect your perspective on Metis culture completely, however, I suggest you rename your web page from "...history..." to something more subjective to maintain accuracy. Subjective opinion is totally legitamate, but the very goal of "history" is to maintain objectivity, avoiding all personal conviction in order to maintain the integrity of the accounts. Accounting is a math, not a philosophy, exspecially in regards to history. And mathimatics is not a "respecter of persons". It is obvios from the start that you are a passionate beleiver in what you write. I bless your conviction. At the same time, when a person gives an account ( a sum ) of history it is important that they maintain rigidity. This means that the historian will have to deny every passion and every emotional sway when they are recording their account. This only applies however when we are dealing with history. If we were talking about philosophy it might be a different story.
Thank you."

Mike Bablitz - 01 - 2005

Thank you for your response.  I truly appreciate your taking the time to write to me.
I'll be referring to your site for education on Metis culture.
I believe you've given an incomparable version of the story. I didn't pay much attention in Social Studies class but I do remember that Canadian History was treated vaguely and unpassionately,
which left me quite apathetic to any social issues.

Mike Bablitz - 01 - 2005

I have been reading from your site all winter and enjoying it.
Appreciate a site like yours with so much information.

Jon Sloan - 01-2005

I recently stumbled upon your web site and must say I thought it was great.
In any event keep up the good work!!!

Patrick E. Riel - 01 - 2005

WOW!!!

Very refreshing to read my history from this point of view.
Absolutely the greatest Canadian History available to date.
Since it is so huge,
would you consider making all the pages available on CD
that we might all have a "hard copy" book or this version of our own history?
I really think that others, as myself, would be ready to pay 15 or 20 dollars for the CD
even though you give us your pages for free.

Bruno Castonguay   01 - 2005

Re: Your wonderful web site.
I am an American of Metis descendent who just found your web site
and want to thank you for the wonderful work
and even more wonderful train of thought it represents.
Thank you for believing that a family must appreciate who and where it's been
in order to know who and where it's going.

Linda King - 01 - 2005

I visited your webpages about the Metis history
and want to congratulate you on a wonderful job.
I found out J.P. Salzl of Clymont was Alberta horseshoe champion in 1930.

Andre Laclerc - 01 - 2005

I am beginning to read your site.
Thank you for your work.
Please tell me if I can help. . .

Fabienne Fellous - 02 - 2005

I was very happy to see a name given to an ancestor of mine on your site.

Lori Dollevoet - 02-2005

I, just came upon your website and I am sooo impressed.
What a lot of work.
Keep up the good work.

Marion Heaney - 02-2005

I greatly appreciate the work and research that went into your website.
I am the author of several books and I'm working on a book about Algonkian Peoples.

The e-mail was a request for some help.
I normally don't include my replies but this is a significant issue.
There are NO Algonquian Peoples in the tribal sense.
There are however dozens of People (tribes) who speak the Algonquian family of languages.
Algonquian is an European linguistic term much like Indo-European.

Stan Mersand - 03 - 2005

I knew that there was Metis blood through my great-grandfather whose last name is St. Germain.
No one in my family has ever pursued their ancestry.
At age age of 45 I took the task on and traced my lineage.
This all brought me to an organization called the Metis Nation of Ontario.
I was able to prove my Metis heritage to the registrar and
was granted citizenship to the Metis Nation of Ontario.
Your story of tracing your own heritage really spoke to me and
I appreciate your determination to pursue who you really are despite people's objections.
I will continue to read the information that you have provided on the web.  With Thanks!

Kerry McLaughlin - 03 - 2005

I would just like to say Thank-you for compiling such a wonderful work of history.
I am Metis and find any history absolutely fascinating.
I have been considering for a couple of years now teaching a Metis Culture class in my town.
After looking at your site and reading quite a bit of it.
My consideration for teaching has been enhanced.
This is our history that is slowly being forgotten.
I appreciate your time and effort you have put into this.

Angie - 03 - 2005

This is just a quick email to say "well done".
The extraordinary collection of information and
the timeline manner in which you've presented it are so impressive.
I was simply googling for information of a New Brunswick-related story
when I came across your web pages.
Even after I read what I was looking for, I remained, reading through it with enthusiasm,
as I was so captivated with the digestible format.

Kendra Black - 03 - 2005

To your website - It's Fantastic!
I enjoyed visiting with you on the phone.
I will certainly be returning to your website as I plan our trip to Quebec in September.
Thanks for making all your information available on-line.
Not many family historians are that generous!

Gail Genereau - 03 - 2005

I've been reading through all your wonderful web pages.
In particular, I was interested in your pages on the Metis.

Chris Jacobson - 03 - 2005

What an undertaking! Your site, though probably not connected to our
lost lady, Marguerite Belisle, (mother of Angelique Sanderson), who
seems to have begun around St. Anne de Detroi...looked interesting so I
got sidetracked and started reading.
It sure helped me to begin understanding the geographical references and
the names used in the old days.
Interesting journey. Thanks for making it available.

Maurice Thevenot - 03 - 2005

The People

This is the best website about the history of the People that I have ever seen.
You should be proud of what you have done and
the impact that passing on the People's Culture has upon your visitors.
I speak for myself; but, I am not much different than others that visit your website.
If follows that you are making a great difference.
Thanks

Steve Kunz - 03 - 2005

I really enjoyed your site, and
respect all of the hard work and energy you put into it.

Sara MacKenzie - 03 - 2005

Metis Section
Good afternoon, I found your work very interesting,
I am wondering if you could give me some direction in order to find a list and
some history of the “voyageurs” engaged to the west between 1715 and 1735.
I would appreciate any advice. Thanks in advance, regards

Luis Fourzán - 03 - 2005

Just discovered your web site of Canadian history and genealogy.
great site! good work......
and I'm just beginning to explore it.
just browsing through your "mission" comments and
couldn't agree more with your motivations.
keep up the work.  cheers,

Jim Williams - 03 - 2005

Thank you- and your website is truly wonderful.
I have referred to it on many occasions and find it very helpful!

Loraine DiCerbo - 04 - 2005

Hello, and thanks for the site.
I've been using it for some research on a fiction novel in progress.

Kent Pollard - 04 - 2005

I absolutely love your website!
Thank you for taking the time to publish this work.

Caroline Morais dit Murry - 04 - 2005

I am writing a unit for Michigan fourth graders on Michigan History.
I am currently working on lessons on Native American cultures in Michigan.
I found your website to be most useful!

Carol Egbo - 04 - 2005

I am a filmmaker who has recently moved from Charlottetown to Edmonton and
recently set myself on the task of creating a film based on events here in
Alberta. After a quick search of the internet I found your website and over the
past few days have read most of it. I find your passion and facts lend to
interesting viewpoints which are two great ingredients for any story.
Essentially what I am getting at is that, I would appreciate any ideas for
stories based in Alberta, anything at all.. I enjoyed reading all the issues
you raised and figured you would be a prime candidate for my research. Thank
you for your time and thank you for the work you have put into your research.

T.J. Gillis - 04 - 2005

This is the best site I have seen for a long time regarding Canadian History.
You should publish a book!!   Thank you

 Patricia Mannella - 05 - 2005

I am in the process of reading all of your on-line history pages. Sure is a lot there. I have two questions: Do you sell this all on one CD, and what are your sources of information? Probably many sources, in particular, you mention ancestors of mine arriving in Mackinac. They were just little girls, and so didn't travel alone. I want to find out who they came with, and why they came.
thanks for the great read!

Pat Bissell - 05 - 2005

Incredible site, especially the Indian history,

Thanks!

John Brill - 05 - 2005

I don't know who you are or why you would put this enormous amount of meticulous work out there for FREE on the web so those of us blundering about with our Indian backgrounds can have at it but, I thank you! It's wonderful and I enjoy it every time I find a few hours to search.

Actually, at first, I just zoomed to the years I was searching, but after a few hours of that I went back to the very beginning and have been reading my way through it.

It's wonderful, you're wonderful!

Nancy Johnson - 05 - 2005

I am a huge fan of your work and your web site.
The historic perspective offered is like breathing fresh air.
Do you ever give public talks
or attend any events like the Metis reunion at Fort Garry, Manitoba this August?
Regards and best wishes,

Francis Halle - 06 - 2005

Wow! Sir, madam... surfing something to do with Forts Edmonton I stumbled into your lodge. That was a dozen hours ago. The more I read, and liberally copied - omitting most of your genealogy but not all, in favor of your historical highlights - the more impressed I was with absolutely everything.

I'm a genealogist as well (Norwegian, English, Irish) and while my ancestry boasts some pretty remarkable individuals, they don't begin to number the familiar names I read in your files. I'm also a retired print and broadcast journalist and TV/film writer with a nagging penchance for grammatical accuracy. Even at this time of morning I strive to write correctly and clearly. I know how flagging our capabilities become after hours of keyboarding and yet with the countless hours you have put into researching and writing your history, it doesn't show in your script.

To put it succinctly, I am very impressed with your excellent job dgarneau and I have scalped your copy liberally. I'm also going to pass on your website to several of my Norwegian genealogy researcher cousins. Thanks for a job very well done.

Bob Coe, - 06 - 2005

my friend, what a eye inspiring read,
i myself an individual driven to find my families begining and possibly end !
michael j. la drigue (la drig)
elder in the original band of chippewa indians,
saginaw chippewa band
my father was in the school at mount pleasant,mi.
and because of the mis treatment ran away and of course never discussed it ,
i will continue to visit your site again and again!!!!!, and hope that my children will also , as you know too late in life we look for the begining to console the thought of the end!

Michael j. la Drigue - 06 - 2005

Good afternoon, By accident I found your web site. It is the most magnificent site I have ever viewed! What an accomplishment, truly great. I was googling with family names Milliette &Desjardon and found your site. Those family names I located in Montreal in the 1830's. My mother always said we were part native although my Grandmother refused to discuss the subject. Now your site has me wondering and the search continues. Thank you for all your hard work, I,m in debt to you.

Elaine Ryan - 07 - 2005

What a brilliant, outstanding human being you are!!!
I LOVE your website.
Your website is FANTASTIC.

I am presently researching ancient history, the origin and evolution of man
and world religion, in order to make sense out of the situation in the world
today which is quite horrific and archaic. The information on your site is
invaluable.

Your work is massively important. You record the truth, pure and simple.
Historians, religious nuts and journalists should bow down to your website,
READ IT and LEARN.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
Do not stop. Do not quit.

Tracy 08-2005

I love your website.

Rod Ladret -08- 2005

Some time ago I printed your ancient history pages
and loved them

Thank you for your seminal work with ancient history!

From Montana, with love for the people and ancient people of British Columbia.

Bob Williams - 09 - 2005

Thank you for the wonderful website. I am FRench Canadian on my mother's side, a relative of the 1644 Indian/French marriage (Provost).

I am writing an article on the Panis and much seems to hinge on the marriage of Bigot/Panie also her sister. Jette has her parents listed as French from Normandie. I'm at a disadvantage since I don't read French. Have you seen the contract? Was he given land as an incentive to Marry an Amerindian? Is that stated in the contract? Are these contracts available?

Any help welcome, and again thanks for the great site. You've certainly done your homework!

Metis History Web Site

Hello, I stumbled upon your website after doing a google search for 'Metis Origins' and have found the information contained on your site very interesting and incredibly helpful. I'm a student currently taking a cultural anthropology class that focuses on Native North Americans; for my final project, I've chosen to write about the Canadian Metis, their origins and the struggles they fought to retain and preserve their incredibly rich cultural heritage. I was wondering if you would allow me to use portions of your articles in my paper. If so, I would like to give you full credit in my paper and on my Bibliography, so will therefore need your name and any background information you are willing to give on your credentials or if there were any main sources you used in your research (the latter being optional, I can simply credit you as a Metis Historian if you choose).

Jessica Black -09- 2005

"Metis section" Outstanding Job!!!

Just wanted you to know I spent a lot of time on your web site reviewing information. Of all the “New France” sites I have been to (and it has been many) yours was the most impressive. I have been doing genealogy research for my family for several years now and came across your site via Google search. If you are interested you can see my work at www.laferriere.us
I am a descendent of Jean Baptiste Charron Dit LaFerrière (Carignan-Salières Regiment, LaFouille Company) and Anne D'Anneville.
Thank you for the information on your site. I have added your site link as a reference to other genealogy researchers.

Joe - 09 - 2005

I've been reading your site for years and still love it and thank you

Deb - 9 - 2005

Metis Section
Wonderful web site!!

Graham Thompson  - 9 - 2005

Your site contains a lot of information. Very good.
But.
It is very ideological. It is my only explanation for some omissions and choice of citations and interpretation.
I read the French History 1900-2005 section
Here are some major omissions :
1982 The unilateral rapatriation of the Constitution by the english-speaking provinces
1987 The Meech Accord to reintegrate Quebec in the Constitution and tell its difference
1990 The failure of the ratification of this Accord
(The Mohawk Crisis happened in 1990 not 89)
1995 -HOW TO FORGET THIS ONE- 49.5% of Quebecers vote for sovereignty, a huge increase from 1980. 25 000 more votes for the Yes side, and Quebec, the only non english-speaking majority state in North America would be SOVEREIGN !

Carl  - 9 - 2005

I am of Metis descent from both Acadian and Trois Riveres Algonquin origins.

I am a frequent reader of your work and enjoy it greatly. It has triggered me to look at many of the individuals on my own from a new perspective. I fully understand that much of what has historically been presented as factual truth of origins of certain individual is a fabrication that systematically has been kept secret.

Again, keep up you great work, it has led me in many interesting directions over the years. I'm not a professional or even a good amateur but I am persistent.

Raymond (Doc) Lussier - 09 - 2005

I HAVE NEVER RED SUCH A FASCINATING PEACE OF WORK I AM PREPARED TO SPEND DAYS RESEARCHING MY OWN HISTORY THROUGH YOUR WORK. MY HISTORY IS CREE AND MOHAWK SO MUCH AS I UNDER STAND SO I GO ON SEARCHING. MY GREAT GRAND FATHER WAS ONESIME LAROCQUE MY GREAT GRAND MOTHER WAS MARIA CLOSS THEY WERE BOTH BORN IN 1856

I've just found your website and am enjoying it.

Terrie Kolean -10 - 2005

Tansi and may all be well with you!
Just a note to say I am still coming back to your website for confirmations of what I question,
laid against historical time-frames.

Thank you for all the research you do and share.

Sarah Queener-Plourde -10 - 2005

I found your web site while researching the original god. I just wanted to let you know that there are others, and probably a growing number, who will find your work ringing the bells of truth.

Just to say, fantastic site. Keep up the good work. If you ever decide to abandon the site, please zip up your files and e-mail them to me. That way your work will exist somewhere, sometime. Well done.

History never stays the same and in a few hundred years your work may in fact be the foundation for a new civilization.

I enjoy your web. site

Ray Lozon - 10 - 2005

You have DELIBERATELY slandered the Hebert name.

The French Heberts did NOT run slaves; that was the English!!

Diana - 10 - 2005

(the message was in the header and was truncated so some was lost, sorry)

My name is Brittany, and I came across your site as I was doing research for an essay I am attempting to write for a University level History class. I'm fascinated by the extent to which you were able to document the New France timeline, and am particularly interested in the 1664 - 1669 section.

Brittany - 10 - 2005

I arrived at your site while looking for something else and stayed for the last 10 hours and I'm not finished yet. By definition I'm of European descent (Acadian French and English) but my daughter in British Columbia has a 12 year old son who is part indian.  I will give him your site although the quantity of information may discourage him somewhat. I feel it is important for him to learn all that he can about his indian heritage without me being pushy about it.
To say that reading the information on your site was very interesting doesn't do it justice. At 62 I have an interest in most things and never seem to have lost my own boyhood curiosity. I also understand that the study of paleo history involves interpreting the "facts" and that this interpretation is subject to all our human foibles. So it comes as no surprise when new information alters the story. What I enjoyed was your perspective and seeing the story through your eyes and for that I thank you very much.

Peter Millington - 11 - 2005

Hi. I like your website very much.  I found it by accident while trying to research my family.

Teresa  - 11 -  2005

Hello,
Just wanted to let you know how amazing your site is,
I have been reading thro for 2 days ,like a good book it is difficult to call it a day and log off.
Thank you for the amazing history lesson!
E. McCormicks -11 - 2005

Thanks for writing your history website. I've spent my free time at
work enjoying reading through it. Very interesting.

Joseph Yakimicki - 11 - 2005

In doing some genealogical research I happened upon your site, which I have used extensively to date in tracing some ancestors and/or putting it in historical context.  And I thank you for that.  The timelines you offer in your sites have been a great help to me, but having noticed a few mistakes and some emotional bias.  You seem to have a chip on your shoulder.

Thank you so much for your prompt answer !
I guess we do think alike on a lot of fronts, really...!
And I am sure that your sites full of info have changed a lot of old stereotypes it's true.
I realized after, that I had only seen portions of your site, mainly the Metis history (that is Fab,by the way) and the French.I then went on the Native history and find it fascinating (not finished reading it all, my b..tt hurt by the time I left my chair yesterday,HEE!) Stiil I say it's a saint's work you've been doing by compiling it all!!!Not a lot of people have that sort of patience! Nice exchanging with you! Helene

Helene Blake -12 - 2005

I just discover your website, and I was very impressed by the historical and genealogical
background of it, also very exited by the raprochement of the Garneau and Munro genealogy because I am
myself interest on a such subject in the eastern part of America...

Leon Codeberg - 12 - 2005

Thank you so very much for put your work on the Internet; I have found it
to be very informative and helpful in my work, doing the genealogy for my
Metis community.
Thank you again for your web site and for any assistance you are able to
send me.

Brenda Bosse -12 - 2005

I read your site and find many of my ancestors listed.
the web page is
wonderful thank you for the work.

Virginia Thorpe  -12-  2005

First of all I want to thank you for the wonderful information. Secondly, I was wondering who were involved in developing this history of the Metis Nation. I am an Indigenous Studies instructor with First Nations University of Canada and the Gabriel Dumont Institutes' Teacher's Education Program (SUNTEP). If you could provide any background about the site I would appreciate it.

The effort you have put forth is vital to anyone studying Metis/Northwest Company/Hudson's Bay
Company/settlement and much much more. Again, thank you my students
will benefit from the information I direct them to your site for.

Christian Thompson -12-  2005

Hi I enjoyed reading your history page

Sasha Iman - 12 -  2005

Firstly I will like to congratulate you for the splendid work which you made on this site.
It is to us of an invaluable help in our research.
Thank you and continue your beautiful work.

Yves Décosse - 12 - 2005

Greetings cousin,
As I assume you are a cousin as you write so nicely about Metis history and identity.

Martin Carriere - 12 - 2005

Your material has helped me on several occasions, and I thank you for it.
Perhaps I can return the favor.  (Which he did)
