Mr. Garneau, I hope you will forgive the imposition,
but given the wealth of information on your website re our Metis ancestors,
Your website continues to be such a valuable resource to me in untangling my family lines,
and I would still be "lost" genealogically-speaking had I not found your website last year. It is my sincere hope that we and those that have gone before us will all meet again someday in that happy hunting ground in the sky.
Ms. Kelly Tyler 01 - 2007
I have just read your very interesting and informative webpages. I too am Metis
and I am also a writer, who is about to dwelve into the world of our people(s).
I am concluding a book on the Metis society which I have titled "Moving
Forwards Backwards". It is as I see it. I would like to be able to quote you
from time to time throughout the book, which I will now have to partially
rewrite in view of this new aspect. Can I have your permission to quote you?
I presently have two books in the National Library of Canada: One is titled The
DownHome Man and the other is titled Voting On The Vote. Both are open swipes
at Canadian politics and politicians. The last being in every university
library and most major colleges in Canada.

I've fall on your website while searching specific information to complete the epidemic timeline from 1630 to 1750 in Nouvelle France. That was yesterday... since I came back a few time... And with the amount of information you have there... And with the way you present it... I will come back over and over again.
What I appreciate the most in your website is the fact that you give opinion.
After reading your website, and why you made it that simple and with explanation on how to navigate thru it... I will do the same for my website. Since years I was trying to make it pretty, but losing my time there instead of inserting content. I was also shy to include my genealogical database... afraid that i had to many mistake in it.. You can not include around 30 000 entry without doing some mistake, it is statistically impossible!
You are a good motivator Mr Garneau. Thank you for having put that work on the net.
Keep on being you. Sorry for my poor english but... not much you can expect in that aspect with someone who's name is France
France Boily -03- 2007
I came across your amazing website.
Thanks for doing that work. iIfound some relatives that i am trying to track.

The Metis webpage is a great historical resource. I am enjoying
reading some of the history on these pages. I am finding a lot of
history that I hadn't know before.
Charles King -03- 2007
I have spent many hours up later than I should be,
reading the history you have so diligently acquired for all of us.
Your work at achieving an understanding of you heritage has been of great benefit to me.
Much of your quest has been mine to, & something I never would have undertaken.
I notice that your work will never be done as you keep adding new information all the time.
Towards the end of my fathers life I use to read to him parts of things off of your site ( & others).
I would explain to him that the names Champagne, Nolin, Parisien, Patenaude, Larocque, Brunelle & etc where his family. My Dad would be somewhat in awe, & say I thought we were all alone in the world. I am so happy that I could give him some sense of his heritage before he passed, although I know he did not really understand the enormity of it all.
Any way thank you from all of my family, for the thousands of hours you have spent.
Nada Nash -03- 2007
I found your site by hazard, it's a remarkable work, actually I m working on a historic project about francophone history for the period between 1800 to 1858 and today,
Rene Digard 03 - 2007
Firstly, let me say thank you and Congratulations on your wonderful body of work that you have posted on the Internet for the public to use. I have made many visits to your site and find it most interesting.

Your website is a significant contribution and I applaud you for your work.
William A. Isabelle - 04 - 2007
I found your web site to very educational and interesting especially reading the histories about my 4th great grandfather Flat Mouth (Eshkebugecoshe) who was the war leader of Leech Lake and my 5th great grandfather Wasonaunequa (Yellow Hair).
I noticed that you have an incredible history on the Cadottes also. Would you have any information on Quaydowwee Gwadowe Cadotte (my 4th great grandfather) and his father Kecheahkukkungay Obequod Ahkahkahshaywene Cadotte (my 5th great grandfather) . Quaydowwee's son Wahsaygeshig Daydodgeegeshig Daydodge married Chief Flat Mouth's daughter Wayzhowushkogwonabeak.
Thank you again for taking the time to share with us histories of ancestors expecially in area that are very difficult to research!
Cheri Mayberry - 04- 2007
I really liked reading through the history pieces you have put together.
However, I do not see any references for any of them and am forced to take you at your word.
As a result it is not something I can use in research.
Further, I have found that you seem very biased against Judaism and Christianity.
Your work could be so much better and more useful if you remained factual, included references,
and stripped it of your biases.
Ken Sanderson -04- 2007
Hi, you have a very interesting and well laid out site,
I really enjoyed looking through it.
Megan -04- -2007
I have been perusing your marvelous web site and
am most interested in your references to early French/native marriages.
Jenny Stephenson -04- -2007
Thank you so much for sharing all the information you have gathered over the years.
I'm a descendant of Lawrence Garneau and have thoroughly enjoyed reading about this amazing man and his family. It's also wonderful to read about the history of Alberta, particularly the Metis history. This information is something I can pass on to my children when they're older and so on.
What a treasure! Thanks again.

My name is Will Khan. I am an independent film maker, and I am working on a film on Marie de l'Incarnation. I was desparately in search of some "real life" journal-type information of that era, and came upon your web site. What a gold-mine! Thank you for devoting your time and energy to amalomating such important detail that is not found in most academic texts.
Will Khan 06-2007
Thanks for your website, history is complex but I feel much of what
I've been told about Canadian history is hiding something.
Darrell Jonsson 06-2007
Hello! I have enjoyed your site for months-I was curious as to where some of your early Christian history (although I am not a believer, my father is a minister and I like to study about Paul and some of the early church history) information comes from.
Tom Harmon 06-2007
I have started the quest of the Umpherville family history.
Yes this has been quite a rollercoaster ride for the past 3yrs of my life and it's been awesome!
I'm writing you to thank you for doing this web site, i have been using it off and on since
I started my project 3 years ago.
It all started when I was told by my husbands family that there was Native blood in the family,
so I took it upon myself to check it out, and for sure there is.
And because of this I have read books not only on the Metis but on other native tribes.
I love the native culture ever since I have started and it has answered alot of questions that
I've had wondered about
and answered and has helped me in my day to day life.
Lia Umpherville 06 - 2007
Aanii ~ I want you to know how much I enjoy your site.
I find it a lot when I’m searching for history to tell someone,
I will remember a bit so I go into google to search and your site comes up.
You have done an awesome job and I appreciate it very much.

Just a quick letter of thanks from me to you.
I am referring to your fantastic site I found this evening while "researching" this lands native people.
I'm not a student of higher learning, nor have I ever been, but I have tried to read a bunch on the net concerning first nation culture
and history. I must say I haven't found anything more informative and interesting in so many ways.
I haven't made it all the way through yet, but plan on reading every page.
I can't imagine how many hours of dedicated study you must have logged to produce such a marvelous ,
laymen breakdown of this lands history.
Anyhow, I must tip my hat to you sir, even if I don't hear back from you,
thanks for your enlightening WebPages and all the work you've put in.
Kevin McNeilly 07 - 2007
I stumbled on your website while searching for material on anti-racism and
I was very impressed by the history section on First Nations people.
Also, I am an anti-racism trainer with a youth and young adult association and
I'm trying to adapt American material for future Canadian trainings.
Would I be able to use some of your material and refer my co-trainers to your website for information?

I can't even begin to tell you what your website and information on the French settlement and the Metis means to me.
I'm not a genealogist, but peoples' lives grab me and I am trying to find out more about my Metis very great grandfather.
I appreciate all you have done to make all your information available.
It will take me a while, but I am a dedicated reader and will read all you have written.
Thank you again. With all best wishes,

I've been meaning to write you for a long time now.
I find your site most helpful and very well done.
As a Metis person, a professional genealogist and avid historian, I find that your research offers invaluable information.
I constantly recommend your site to new researchers and hope that it will remain online for many, many years to come!!

Thank you for publishing it.

I can see you want me to jump into the POLITICALLY CORRECT definition of Metis. I usually don't pay homage to politically correctness. The term 'Metis Nation' is a current trend with lots of different hidden agendas.
In my opinion there is no such thing as 'Metis Nation' and there is no reference in history to Metis Nation.
NATION: "A politically organized body under a single government"
"A federation of tribes"
'The people who live in a nation or country".
The Metis People can best be described as an evolving 'Metis Culture', a 'Distinct Society' maybe!
The Metis People of North America are not politically organized under a single government.
The Metis People of North America were never a federation of tribes like the Iroquois or Algonquin tribes.
The Metis People of North America never lived in a nation or country, they were too busy exploring and developing America.
To call the Metis People, a Metis Nation, we have to accommodate the Metis from B.C., Alberta, Quebec, Acadia, or Louisiana and this is not likely to happen in the near future.
The Metis Culture developed primarily in Detroit; Wisconsin & Minnesota especially south of Lake Superior, and later in Red River, Manitoba. The first significant Metis settlement was Acadia but most preferred to call them selves Arcadians.
Manitoba is I believe one of the first to include the 'Metis Nation' philosophy to the exclusion of other Metis People. I believe this is driven by a desire for power, a sign of arrogance and an inferiority complex. This type of thinking had no place in early Indian Culture (The People) or early Metis Culture.
Jean Champagne wrote:
Bonjour - Can you tell me why a Metis from Quebec is not recognized as a Metis in Manitoba? ? Who coined the phrase ' Metis nation" . It seems that Mr Chartrand and its western allies had an hidden agenda when they defined Metis as belonging or coming from the Metis nation. Can you shed some light on this. A group of Metis friends from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec have difficulty understanding this issues. How come the Canadian government does not have a definition of the work Metis in their Charter of Right and Freedom?

Bonjour,
Bravo pour ce site magnifique, quel travail!
En le parcourant, j'ai trouvé quelques renseignements sur mes ancêtres.
Hello, Cheer for this splendid site, what a work! By traversing it, I found some information on my ancestors.
Congratulations,
Roger Bellemare. 10 - 2007
I just came upon your site and was delighted.

The time and effort you put into this History is beautiful.
You have taught me so much about the early times in my family history.
I didn't find much about the Lemieux or Aubuchon,
but I have learned about the possibility of my Metis heritage. I am so proud and honored by your works.
JoAnn LaMew 11 - 2007
I'm greatly enjoying your website.
Michael H. Ryan 12 - 2007
Your website contains much useful information for historians such as myself.
I am working on a book due out in the next short while,
Old Strathcona Before the Great Depression to be published with Metis Strathcona by Randy Lawrence.
As you can imagine we write quite a bit about L. Garneau. Value-add was
added to web site.
Aside from this nit-picking, great work on a comprehensive and well-organized
"job of work".
Any value-add is appreciated and is not considered as nit-picking.

Love your site, am a 70 year old Lady in New Orleans, and
find my French lineage goes back (5) times to Marie Rouensa and Michel Phillippe in
Kaskaskia.
After 300 years not quite sure what my percentage of Indian Blood is,
but am very proud of my ancestry and wish to learn more about the culture.
