THANKS TO THE WORLD WIDE WEB, ALL ROADS LEAD TO MY COMPUTER

burning computer

My technical nature wants to include frames, fancy graphics, plug ins, and all the latest things of a web site.
My primary objective however is to allow the lower level computer folks
access to this educational site.  I have recently added a few graphics and have not received complaints.

The primary web site is (www.agt.net/public/dgarneau) or (www.telusplanet.net/public/dgarneau)
Site size December 31, 2002 = 10.2 MB @ 484 pages
As Telus now allows 15Mb for web site storage up from 5MB
A second site was established at members.NBC1.com/hexaquad,
NBC acquired Xoom then shut down free service
Site size December 31, 2002 = 15.2 @ 561 pages

Opened 2nd site Xoom December 27, 1999
The NBCi site is closed effective July 15, 2001
Moved to G2GM and they restricted site size
Moved to Tripod/Lycus October 22, 2001
This site size is 15.2 MB with 20 MB allowed

A small advertising header is a small price to pay for a free site.
Both sites are linked together but it is recommended that you bookmark
the home page or directory on the Telus site.
The Telus site is least likely to change as its a paid for site vs a free site
The total site size as at December 31, 2002 = 25.4 MB @ 1045 pages

Hits on sites = 475 for year 1999
Hits on site = 11,248 for year 2000
Hits on site=26,427 for year 2001
Hits on site=33,350 for year 2002
Hits on site=35,044 for year 2003
Hits on site=63,852 for year 2004
Hits on site = 46,812 for tear 2005
Total hits on sites = 217,208 to Dec 31, 2005

The maximum number of hits per day was established November 30, 2000 at 1,146
The reason was the result of a listing on the Roots Web site.

The maximum number of hits per day was recorded June 18, 2003 at 1,764
The reason was the Diabetic Associations finally accepted the validity of the Glycemic Index of foods

I only have a counter on the directory page of the Telus site.
It only counts one person, one time, per day on this page.

I know that 1,000's of visits to the Telus site each month never visit my directory page
therefore it is only a relative measure.

A page count has been added November 1, 2002 to
10 pages to determine which sections folks are visiting.
This helps me determine where to expend my efforts.
Over time it will also give me a more accurate total site visits.
The first two month period records more than twice as many folks visit the site as is recorded on directory page,
or 135/day for directory  vs. 271/day for the 10 pages
I have about 12 hit counters trying to understand the traffic flows
and to understand the needs of visitors.
As an example the introduction of a Chat Room resulted in 1,000 additional hits per month.
As at September 1, 2003 it is estimated the actual unique to-date visits = 212,375
I suspect if all pages were reported we would be recording 500 to 750 unique hits per day

We also know that each unique visitor visits at least 2.3 sections per visit.

I have stopped the Directory hit counter September 1, 2003 as it doesn't value-add to my site.

WHAT ARE THE WEB TAGS NOT GENERALLY ACCEPTED?

About 17% of those who visit this site are less than MSIE 4.0 or N 4.0 and therefore would be adversely affected with a major upgrade of HTML code.  The % of lower level computers has dropped considerably since 1999.

Dynamic DHTML is limited to    MSIE 4.0 and N 4.0 or greater
Cascading CSSI 2.0 is limited    MSIE 4.0 and N 4.0 or greater
Style Sheets are limited to            MSIE 4.0 and N 4.0 or greater
Frames are limited to                  MSIE 3.0 and N 2.0 or greater
Floating Frames are limited to      MSIE 3.0 and N 4.0 or greater
Marquees are limited to               MSIE 3.0                or greater
Multi Column text limited to                               N 3.0 or greater
PNG Graphics are standardized  MSIE 4.0 and N 4.0 or greater
Layers by Netscape
Dynamic Fonts by Netscape
Java by Netscape
Java Script by Netscape
ECMAScript established as a standard by ECMA
VBScript is Visual Basic only for MSIE
Plugins are limited to                MSIE 3.0 and N 2.0 or greater

Most HTML 2.0 codes are universally accepted as standard
Most HTML 3.2 codes will likely be accepted as standard
CSSI, Script and Frames are likely to gain acceptance over time.
HTML codes not accepted by both MSIE and Netscape are not likely to become a standard
If used test to ensure they do not have an adverse effect on the other browser.

Acceptence however does not retrofit into old browsers

MSIE Frontpage needs server extensions for Hit Counters, Banner Ads, Hover Buttons, Marquees, Search Forms, Confirmation Field, Discussion Group, User Registration and Table of Contents.
