POODLE (STANDARD)

Oldest of the three breeds of Poodle, the Standard is the original from which the Miniature and Toy. Were developed. The breed is a member of the family of water dogs and is closely related to the Portuguese Water Dog and the Irish Water Spaniel. Widely known throughout Europe as a retriever of waterfowl. it is possible that either Germany or Russia was the Poodle's country of origin, although France seems to be the country most responsible for popularizing the breed both as a family pet and sporting dog. In that country, the breed is known as the 'caniche,' a name derived from the French word for duck. The Standard Poodle measures over 15 in. at the shoulder, the average being from 22 to 26 in. The coat is dense and of harsh texture and may be in any solid colour - black, blue, brown, gray, silver, cafe-au-lait, apricot, cream and white - with dark pigmentation of nose, lips and eye rims preferred. To keep it free of mats, the coat should be brushed frequently and clipped regularly about four times a year minimum. Special care should be taken to keep the Poodle's long, thickly feathered ears clean and free from infection. With his stylish demeanor, clean habits, non-shedding coat and desire to please, the Poodle makes a superior house pet for town or country. The Standard needs plenty of outdoor exercise but is suited to a house or a high-rise.

POODLE (MINIATURE)

Created in response to popular demand, the between-size Poodle, the Miniature, is probably the best known and most numerous. The breed name 'poodle' comes from the German word 'puddeln,' which means 'to splash in water.' Nowadays, the two acceptable show clips - the 'continental' and the 'English saddle' - are highly stylized versions of the original trim used on the Standard Poodle to lighten the weight of the dog's coat when swimming to retrieve waterfowl. It also protected joints and vital organs from the cold. Extremely versatile, the Poodle was a favorite circus performer, easy to train and full of fun. In addition, his keen scenting ability often found the Poodle working during the winter months searching out the delectable subterranean fungus called truffles. The coat, colours, care and general conformation of the Miniature are identical to those of the Standard, but this mid-size measures 15 in. or under at the shoulder. For this reason the breed is an ideal size for city living, and his charming manners make him an ever-welcome member of the family circle. Bright, intelligent and eager to please, the Poodle enjoys obedience training.

POODLE (TOY)

Tiniest member of the Poodle trio, the Toy Poodle measures 10 in. or under at the shoulder. Bright, amusing, good natured and clever, the Toy Poodle can be an ideal companion for the less active and those with limited living accommodation. The breed makes a fine little watch dog, protective of his home but not given to senseless barking. And for those who need a little dog to pamper, this breed seems made-to-order. His coat is dense and harsh and comes in all solid colours. It needs frequent brushing and regular professional grooming to maintain the desired outline. While adult show dogs are limited to two acceptable clips, the pet Poodle may be trimmed in a variety of styles, according to the owner's preference. Ears should be cleaned as necessary and dusted with antiseptic powder to prevent infection. Toenails should be trimmed or filed short enough to keep the toes from spreading, and hair between the pads should be trimmed to prevent matting. The Toy Poodle is not fragile, but neither is it robust enough to be considered suitable as a small child's pet.
