John Carroll is twice a graduate of the University
of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada
in Chemical Engineering. He obtained his Bachelor degree in 1980 and
his Doctorate in 1990.
His doctoral thesis was titled Phase Behaviour in the System
Water-Hydrogen Sulfide -
a thorough examination of the
phase equilibria in this binary system.
Several papers arose from this work and it was the germ for
the development of AQUAlibrium.
In the time between completing his bachelor degree and returning to the U. of A. for graduate school, Dr. Carroll worked as an engineer in Alberta's oil patch.
After obtaining his Ph.D., he worked at the University of Alberta as a Research Associate and a Sessional Lecturer, teaching heat transfer and numerical analysis. He also worked on several research projects, resulting in many papers and conference presentations. Much of this work has been incorporated into AQUAlibrium.
Dr. Carroll is the author or co-author of almost 40 papers in refereed journals, 20 articles in technical magazines, and approximately 50 conference presentations. A complete list of his publications can be obtained by following this link. Many of the listings include abstracts. He has a special interest in the application of Henry's Law. A series of papers, culminating in the publication of "Henry's law - Revisited" (Jan. 1999), have appeared in Chemical Engineering Progress. Other papers on Henry's Law have appeared in other publications as well.
Following his term with the U. of A., he worked for Honeywell Hi-Spec Solutions (formerly SACDA) in London, Ontario. At Honeywell, he worked to develop a new thermodynamics and physical properties calculation package for their simulation software. He was the Team Leader of a group of dedicated thermodynamicists.
Dr. Carroll is a registered professional Engineer in the Provinces of Alberta and New Brunswick. He is a Member of The Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC), a Member of The Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE), member of the Society for Petroluem Engineers (SPE), an Associate Member of The Canadian Gas Processors Association (CGPA), a Member of the European Gas Processors Association (EGPA), and an Associate Member of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC).
John is the Director, Geostorage Process Engineering at
Gas Liquids Engineering in Calgary, Alberta.

natural gas sweetening, hydrocarbon processing, acid gas injection, fluid phase
equilibrium, and the GLENEX Process™ (a licensed GLE process).

He is also the instructor for several courses offered by Technical training Services, a subsidiary of Gas Liquids Engineering. This includes a day-long class on gas hydrates designed for people in the natural gas industry. These courses are usually taught in the GLE Training facilities, but they have also been taught overseas including: Malaysia, Thailand, China, England, Scotland, Germany, Qatar, The United Arab Emirates, and Venezuela.
