Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park was created in 1957. In 1977, a portion of the park was designated an Archaeological Preserve to protect the largest concentration of rock art, created by Plains People, on the Great Plains of North America. There are over 50 rock art sites, with thousands of figures, as well as numerous archeological sites. The park has a reconstructed North-West Mounted Police Post located on its origional site. Writing-On-Stone is one of the largest areas of protected prairie in the Alberta Parks System, and includes significant coulee enviroments and prairie wildlife habitats.

Visitor Services

Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park offers interpretive programs from mid-May to early September. Throughout the summer, at 2 p.m. daily there are guided walks to the rock art. Additional tours are added during the peak season. Free tickets are handed out at the Naturalists' office, down in the campground area, one hour before each tour begins. All summer there are additional hikes, events, and evening programs. Schedules are posted throughout the park. Call (403)647-2364 for more information.

Group Bookings and Reservations

Writing-On-Stone has a group use area which can be reserved. However, campsites are available on a "first-come" basis only. Reservations are not available. School tours can be booked for late May through June, and there are a limited number of tours available for booking by other organized groups. Call (403)647-2364 for more information.
