If you ever browse through Lee Valley tool cataloges you, may recognize this picture of a couple of my basswood eggheads. It is scanned from page 30 of their May '96 mini-catalog. I like carving basswood eggs and of course if I carve a face I call it an egghead. I use the same basic techniques for carving small faces as I do for large ones. Just use smaller tools. Check this site out once in awhile for new eggheads.

Please note the small hole in the bottom of the unpainted carving. It was put there by a drywall screw that was epoxyed in the end of a piece of 1/2 inch dowel. I cut off the screw head first, drilled a hole in one end of the dowell, a little larger than the dull end of the screw and glued it in. Some carvers call this a paint stick, but it also a safety stick, it is easier and safer to carve an egghead utilizing this simple tool to help hold the egg while carving.

Here are two santa's carved from basswood eggs and sitting in hardwood eggcups, painted with acrylics and woodburning included.
